Highly efficient cataract surgery camp on Bougainville

In the short time of only one week in late August/early September, a team from Goroka General Hospital led by Dr. Waimbe Wahamu had to stage an eye camp at the Arawa District Hospital on the autonomous island province of Bougainville, about 1000 km away. Only one day was available for patient screening. During the following four days, 70 cataract patients were successfully operated on. Three of them were children.

With efficient work, coordinated procedures and functioning technology, this remarkable result could be achieved.
